Jay-Z Ebony Cover
July 4, 2008 · No Comments
Ebony have a special edition focusing on the ‘25 Coolest Brothers Of All Time’. Jay-Z is part of the 25 along with Barack Obama, Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Prince, Muhammad Ali, Marvin Gaye among others.
Members of The Hip Hop Chronicle have managed to meet Jay on a few occassions. The dude is chilling. He’s very relaxed and most of all, he’s really nice.
Did we forget to mention, Jay-Z along with Memphis Bleek TORE down London last night. They headlined the first day of the O2 Wireless Festival.
For a Indie Rock crowd to be singing to Jay’s songs is a sight to see.

Young Jeezy On The Cover Of Vibe
July 1, 2008 · 1 Comment

This the first time, the rapper has graced the cover of Vibe.
He talks about his relationship with Keyshia Cole, about ‘Put On’ ft Kanye and politics - “No disrespect to my man Barack but I f— with John McCain. He greeted me like a G…The fact that he acknowledged me was crazy…I like Barack, but at the same time I wanted to see what McCain was talking about.”).
Jeezy also talks about his career-threatening vocal injury. Its certainly a must read
The rest of this month’s issue looks fantastic.
There is a wonderful section called ‘Bringing ‘88 Back, which takes a look at the classic year in Hip Hop focusing on Run DMC, NWA, Public Enemy and many more.
There is also a great section on Internet superstars like Jay Electronica and Crooked I.
This month’s Vibe magazine is on newstands from tommorow.

UPDATE - JAY-Z GLASTONBURY PERFORMANCE IN FULL CLICK HERE TO WATCH
For those of you who didnt get the memo, my name is Jay-Z and Im pretty f*cking awesome
- Jay-Z

Jay-Z opening his set with ‘Wonderwall’, a hit track by the band Oasis (Noel Gallagher’s band).
Overall it was a great set by Jay-Z. As we said in the previous post, the choice to play Wonderwall was genius. Everyone in the UK knows that track and its a great way to get a rock crowd on your side.
After weeks of speculation. Jay didnt bring out any guests. I guess he wanted to show he could do it on his own and thats exactly what he did. Bleek came out for 99 Problems but Jay went solo for the rest of the set.
Beyonce was there but only to support and she seemed to have a great time.
His energy was right. He was professional and dignified.
The crowd were into Jay’s set. They really seemed to enjoy it. Its cool to see Rock fans putting their diamonds in the air!
Jay-Z proved his doubters wrong, those who felt he didnt belong there, ultimately lost because he rocked it.
Its a great night for Hip Hop and we have to tip our hats to Jay.
Lets hope Hip Hop gets the credit it deserves from other genres
Oh btw, his band was on point
Set List
Wonderwall
- Fantasic opening
99 problems
- Great to see Bleek grace the stage with Jay
Is That Your Chick
- At first wasnt sure how well this track would go down but when he mixed it with Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up’, it was the right choice.
Rehab
- Amy is well supported in the UK and it was a good move to do this track. We knew he was going to do this track, just wasnt sure if he was going to bring Amy out.
I Know
- With the band playing this live, its an awesome track. Jay - ‘Baby You Like’, Crowd - ‘Hov’
A Billie (A Millie Freestyle)
- His lyrical performance was on point. His accapella of this freestyle went down well.
Blue Magic
- A great lead in to show his support for Obama and ‘F*uck Bush’, which the crowd loved.
Minority Report
- The crowd were really digging his accapella’s. I think this was a great move by Jay because that way, they can understand exactly what he is saying without the band playing.
PSA
- Always a crowd pleaser. ‘Whenever there’s a drought, get your umbrella’s out, cause thats when I brainstorm’
Dirt Off Your Shoulders
- Played the Collision Course remix but he certainly had the crowd brushing off their shoulders
Jigga What, Jigga Who
- Was slightly hard to hear whether all the crowd were screaming ‘Jigga What’, ‘Jigga Who’
Izzo (H.O.V.A)
- Went with the Jackson 5, ABC rhythm. Always a crowd pleaser.
Can I Get A
- hmm, not sure if this worked. Didnt get people dancing as I think he anticipated but it wasnt that out of place.
Beware Of The Boys
- ‘P.I.M.P. I am simply’. The remix of Punjabi Mc’s track will always get the crowd moving.
Give It To Me (I Just Wanna Love You)
- Up beat track and was keeping in tune with the last 6 tracks
Show Me What You Got
- ‘Now Wave, Wave’ and the people were. I was really impressed with the band on this one.
Excuse Me Miss
- The start of the smooth tracks of his set. Considering its 11.30pm at night, the crowd wont be able to keep the high energy throughout. He had the crowd moving side to side.
Song Cry
- Fantastic track. He wanted to sing the song to a girl in the crowd but I think they were slightly embarressed.
Girls, Girls, Girls
- The last of the smooth tracks before the home-stretch of his set
American Boy Remix
- The last line of Jay’s freestyle is ‘not that … our jewellary is being guarded by the Queen. A picture of the queen comes up on the screen, Jay screams ‘Not That One’. He probably means Beyonce which is a nice touch
Umbrella
- Such a huge record, it had to crowd singing along
Big Pimpin
- The rock crowd were really into this one. ‘Bounce, Bounce’
Hard Knock Life
- The Annie sample and the beat had everyone drooling. The hook is so simple, everyone was singing along.
Heart Of The City
- Not the original, it was remixed with a U2 track. Sonically its not the best cover but had a rock sound. Hova let the stage after this track. There were sections of the crowd shouting ‘Jay-Z, Jay-Z, Jay-Z’. Usually at Hip Hop gigs, we chant ‘Hova Hova Hova’.
Encore
- Finally Jay went with Encore, the Linkin Park remix. He put his heart and soul into this one. You could hear it in his voice. It was almost like he was bowing out.
This track is always a great way to end a set

The only song I would have love to have seen would have been ‘Roc Boys’.
Beastie Boys were at Glastonbury in 1992 (we think) and that went down well. Jay represented Hip Hop well yesterday.
We were at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Bash on Friday. We saw Queen perform and they ROCKED! ‘We Will Rock You’ is a sight to see but watching them made me think about Jay’s performance game and Hip Hop’s in general. Queen can rock a stage anywhere in the world, Jay-Z can too (and any doubters, just watch the performance) but we see what Jay is saying when he talks about other artist’s performance game. Eminem is great, Kanye is fantastic and Hip Hop needs more of these types of performances.

Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Concert (Pictures)
June 28, 2008 · 4 Comments
The Hip Hop Chronicle were in attendance at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Celebration concert. The likes of Jamelia, Will Smith, Emmanuel Jal, Simple Minds, Sugababes, Queen and Amy WInehouse all performed. Below are a selection of photos from the concert.
Will & Jada looked great together and did very well. The crowd responded well to them.
British superstar Leona Lewis was great. It was the first time The HHC saw Leona perform live and we were blown away. Her vocal range is fantastic.
She has come along way and we are happy for her.

The amazing artist Emmanuel Jal also graced the stage. Emmanuel performed ‘Emma’. Its a tribute song to a British aid worker, Emma McCune who saved Emmanuel. What a wonderful woman. It’s because her generosity that Emmanuel is here to tell his story.

Emmanuel was introduced by the legend Peter Gabriel who called Emmanuel ‘a young Bob Marley’
We are very proud of Emmanuel. His energy was on point. The crowd responded very well to him. He was supported by the Soweto Gospel Choir.

By the end, those our us were saying what a great performance Emmanuel put on.

You can purchase Emmanuel’s album, Warchild from Amazon or by clicking the link below. The Washington Post have hailed the album as one of the best of the year.
Emmanuel has featured on CNN, BBC, Sky News, USA Today, BBC 1Xtra.
He is going to be a superstar

130 suites arranged on three levels are renting for an average of $300,000 (for 5-, 7- and 10-year rentals). Aaliyah On Fader
May 9, 2008 · 1 Comment
Its been 7 years since the passing of Aaliyah. This is their annual Icon Edition, entitled ‘Icon Edition: A Tribute To The Influential Aaliyah. There’s contributions from family members, friends and people who worked with her. Below the picture are some exerpts

Missy Elliott
“We was gonna save the world. We was gonna change music every chance we got. We was gonna always be family. Forever.”
Mark Ronson
“If it wasn’t for Aaliyah being the face and voice of [Missy Elliott and Timbaland’s] sound they might have never got to where they did. They were presenting their sort of brilliant but challenging breakthrough music through this beautiful young girl who could sing it perfectly.”
Kidada Jones
“I think about her all the time…Anytime she’s brought up or her music comes on the radio, it’s sweet, but it definitely sounds like she found a niche before it was here. If you listen to her music it’s so relevant today, but we had it so long ago.”
Damon Dash (was engaged to Aaliyah)
“She was already a fashion icon, she was getting into movies, she had already planted that seed. If she was alive today she would be so relevant. I see little bits of her everywhere I look, in a lot of artists.”
Jomo Hankerson
“I think a lot of that mysteriousness they talk about was just what she was. She seemed like she came here already grown up, from the beginning.”
