Young Prozpekt - Indian Prince

April 27, 2008 · 6 Comments

The Hip Hop Chronicle is proud to introduce the Indian Prince, Young Prozpekt, straight out of New Delhi India. Hip Hop as a genre reaches so many people across the world and influences them in ways that people never thought it could. So at the Chronicle we are proud of Hip Hop and of the journey its made to Asia.

For those who dont know you, tell us who you are?

Well, I am a rapper from New Delhi, India. I have been on the grind for a few years now and my recognition in the Indian hip-hop scene is now fast growing. I have also been on tracks with well-known artists from the U.S, U.K and Canada.

You hail from India, how would you describe your sound?

I would say my sound is a blend of American hip-hop with an Indian sensibility. I have established my self as a multi-lingual rapper, rapping in both Hindi (Indian language) and English. This concept wasn’t seen before in India, so im kind of a pioneer right now. Iv also brought the concept of lyricism in terms of metaphors and punch lines to India. Indian hip hop is largely the ‘socially aware’ style of hip hop. I don’t have a problem with that but I don’t follow it , I write for everyone.. and every likes to hear stuff they can relate to, not preach to.

Whats the hip hop movement like in India and what’s its potential?

The hip-hop movement in India is still at a nascent stage. It has been steadily on the rise with Indian pop or Bollywood music starting to integrate hip-hop styles. The potential though, is huge! India is developing fast and so is hip hop over here. The main problem lies in penetrating the mass audience which can only be done when hip-hop is Indianized and becomes relatable to our youth. Just like like they did in Japan. Give it a few years- India is next!

Tell us about how to got interested into music and your musical influences?

As a kid I was fond of public enemy and kriss kross, we had just started getting Mtv in India then. From there I went on to develop a love for hip hop, being hugely influenced by Snoop Dogg, Too Short and the late Mac Dre. I also love the fusion of Indian instruments into hip hop, which hugely influences my selection of beats. I don’t come from a musical family background, so for me it was just a matter of realizing my talent on my own. I lived in London, U.K for a few years where I started battling and then it was just a question of making the transition from street corners to the studio.

What can you bring to the game?

I can bring a breath of fresh air. Plus I don’t talk about how much my chain costs..partly because I don’t have an expensive chain …but also because I think it’s a waste of recording time. I can bring the game a new language, sort of like reggeton did, but a fusion to make it acceptable to a wider audience. I can bring rap that is upbeat but at the same time not devoid of lyrics. I can bring you the realities of a third world country!

If you could work with one producer and one rapper that is alive who would they be?

Producer would be Timberland, I really like what hes doing right now and he uses a lot of Indian instruments in his music. Rapper would have to be Snoop.. iv been hugely inflenced by his music growing up and hes really creative with his shit.

Timberland

What can we expect from Young Prozpekt in the future?

Well I am currently working on a my mixtape titled ‘India’s Finest’ which will release in May (2008), I also have 2 other mixtape projects with Indian and international Dj’s lined up for 2008. These will be previews to what I have in store, so you can expect a full length album by the first quarter of 2009. Hopefully I will have an opportunity to cross over to international markets too.

Bonus Track - the multi-lingual track ‘F Wit Us’
